With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, you may be scrambling to find ways to entertain visiting family and friends. Look no more! This holiday is all about enjoying the company of loved ones and expressing your thanks. In today’s blog, we are sharing just a few of our favorite family fun ideas for this special fall time holiday.
The thankfulness game
This activity is what Thanksgiving is all about! Gather the family around the table and have everyone share at least one thing they are thankful for this year. Kids may share silly things while the adults express more sentimental ideas—but the important thing is that everyone acknowledges the great people and events in their life.
Outdoor fun
Here in Central Florida, the weather at Thanksgiving is perfect for outdoor entertaining and fun activities. Invite everyone outside for a game of touch football, badminton, soccer or tag. You can even try organizing a group competition, such as a sack race or obstacle course. No matter what you choose, you and your guests are sure to have a great time enjoying the cooler weather.
Family photo
Don’t let your only family photos be smartphone snapshots. While our phones are great tools for capturing candid, spur-the-moment memories, be sure to organize a more formal family photo this Thanksgiving. Repeat this every Thanksgiving for an easy, “cheap” keepsake of your family get togethers. Later on, you can even have your photo printed on a mug, soft blanket, pillow or other souvenir.
“Remember when…”
No one likes to be reminded of their more embarrassing moments—but this is what the “remember when” game is all about! Invite your family and guests to recall old memories of each other. These can be childhood memories or more recent recollections… either way, this activity is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face (and will stir up plenty of laughs!).
Yearly reflections
While Thanksgiving isn’t quite the end of the year, it may be one of the only big get togethers many families can share. If that’s true for you, be sure to share your reflections for the year with your family as you enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. What were some of the best memories? What happened that you’ll never forget? By doing this every year, you can turn Thanksgiving into a sort of catching-up time for family you rarely see.
Charades
Who can turn down a good game of charades? Have everyone jot down their ideas on small slips of paper, then place them in a hat and shake them all up. Whoever is “it” will pick an idea out of the hat and act it out—which, as you probably already known, can lead to hilarity and hearty laughs all around.
Talent show
The kids (or even adults) in your family may be eager to show off a particular talent or skit this Thanksgiving. Host a small Thanksgiving talent show to give them a chance to do that. Everyone involved will love to display their talents—and those watching get to kick back and enjoy the show after a hearty dinner.
Karaoke
When it comes to karaoke, it’s not about singing talent—it’s about getting together, sharing a few laughs and having a great time with family and friends! Throw together a mini karaoke party (you can simply search songs to perform online) and watch as your guests show off their singing chops.
This Thanksgiving, don’t feel the need to impress your family and friends with lavish entertainment—all the fun you need is right there inside you! And until then, we would like to wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving.
